SaskPower, K+S Potash Canada Enter Power Purchase Agreement
February 18, 2026
SaskPower has entered into an agreement to purchase power generated through the refining process at K+S Potash Canada (K+S)’s Bethune mine.
K+S is expanding a combined heat and power (CHP) facility near the mine to include three natural gas turbines and heat recovery steam generators. The cogeneration facility will provide power and steam for the company’s mining operation and electricity for SaskPower.
“This agreement is a win-win that will make additional reliable generation available to SaskPower while supporting the further development of our province’s world-leading potash industry,” said Jeremy Harrison, Minister Responsible for SaskPower. “It’s another example of the all-of-the-above approach we are taking to ensure the reliable, affordable and secure power our growing province needs.”
The agreement will allow SaskPower to purchase up to 62 megawatts (MW) of natural gas-generated power from K+S starting in late 2026 through the end of 2034.
“We are continuing to make the necessary investments to grow, modernize and diversify our power system,” said Rupen Pandya, SaskPower President & CEO. “Building and leveraging partnerships with industry and independent power producers is an important aspect of maintaining reliable and affordable power for all our customers.”
“We’re pleased to work collaboratively with SaskPower and government to secure this high value capital investment in the province,” said Sam Farris, President, K+S Potash Canada. “Cogeneration allows K+S to reduce our GHG footprint, contributing to our global K+S climate targets, enables potash production expansion in Canada, and supplies affordable, baseload power to the province. It also allows us the flexibility for Indigenous partnership projects such as the Wicehtowak Solar project.”
The Bethune solution potash mine is located approximately 31 kilometres northeast of Moose Jaw. K+S extracts potash crude salt at this location, which is further processed into two types of potassium chloride.
